Robert Mugabe resigns as President of Zimbabwe, ending 37-year rule

Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has resigned, bringing an end to 37 years of rule if the country.

"I Robert Gabriel Mugabe formally resign my presidency of the Republic of Zimbabwe with immediate effect," said the speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda, reading, with applause, the letter of resignation of the head of state.

I chose to voluntarily resign... This decision was motivated by my desire to ensure a smooth, peaceful and non-violent transfer of power," Mugabe said in his letter.
